You’ve found your hound, your application has been approved and your home visit has been completed; You’re ready to adopt!
An authorized representative of QCG will meet with you to review, sign and date the adoption contract, and to collect the adoption fee. Adoption fees help cover the greyhound’s spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm check, physical exam, transportation, and care while the dog is fostered. The adoption fee will be collected at the time that the dog is brought to your home, unless other arrangements have been previously made.
The representative can also bring a handy adoption package (with prior notice) to save you a bit of time in getting all of the necessities your new greyhound will need. These adoption packages also help us raise a bit of money for QCG to help us bring more dogs up to the Cincinnati metro area for adoption.
Want to learn more? Read “Coming Home” for more insight on what to expect as you and your new greyhound adapt to a new life together. Once your application is received, someone will call you within a day or two to schedule a telephone interview and home visit. If you do not hear from us within a couple days, please call. We are all volunteers and do the best to get back to you as soon as possible.
The application requests that you list three references; these references will be contacted as well. If you rent your residence, QCG will contact the landlord to verify that you are permitted to have a greyhound at your property.
Before finalizing the adoption, an authorized representative of QCG will visit your home with the greyhound; We do this to ensure every greyhound is being adopted into a safe and healthy environment. This brief visit is to also make sure we have a chance to help you make your house “grey-safe,” protecting both the greyhound and your belongings. The QCG member will also give you helpful tips to help you, and your greyhound, adjust to life with each other. This is also a great opportunity to have one-on-one time with a seasoned greyhound owner to ask any questions that have come to mind. Think you’ve found that special grey? Excellent. The next step is to submit your application to QCG for review. Our application is available online for you to complete. Or, if need be, you can download an application in PDF format to either mail or e-mail to us.
The adoption fee for a retired racing greyhound is $250 for a greyhound 2 years of age or older (up to 7 yrs), $295 between ages 6 months and 2 years, and $375 for dogs under 6 months. Senior greys (7+) and special needs greys have an adoption fee of $150. All available dogs have been spayed/neutered, fully vetted and are up to date on shots. There is a $50 application fee that will be deducted from your final cost of adoption. If you are not approved for adoption, the fee will be refunded to you.
Check out our Available Dogs section to see if any of our retired racers catch your eye. There, you’ll be able to view photos, read the bios and see what the foster family has to say about each of our available greyhounds. Our foster families also try to make sure that they bring our available greyhounds to QCG Events, so make sure to head to our Meet & Greets to see our available dogs in person. If there is a specific dog you want to see, please email QCG, and we will notify you of which events that greyhound will be attending.
We want each potential adopter to take the time, before you adopt, to learn about retired racing Greyhounds and fully understand the type of dog you will be adopting. Queen City Greyhounds wants to ensure a greyhound fits your expectations and lifestyle. Greys are an amazing breed, but they are not right for every family or individual.
So, how do you know if a greyhound is right for you? Please visit the “Are You Ready?” section to get a summary of things you may want to consider when deciding if a greyhound is the perfect addition to your family. You can also check out our “Learn” section of our site to educate yourself on the breed, and ask questions about greyhounds in the QCG Forum. Or, you can email us and a representative of QCG will be in contact with you to answer your questions. It’s also a good idea to come to a QCG Event to meet the greyhounds and to have the opportunity to discuss the breed with greyhound owners. Check out our Events page to see where we’ll be in the Cincinnati metro area.
